Lecture and proseminar grades
Exam for the lecture
Check the dates and locations of the three exams on the Schedule page. Make sure to arrive early enough so that you already seated by the given start time (e.g. 8:00 for the first exam).
The exam duration is 105 minutes and you are allowed to use the following additional resources:
- One sheet of A4 paper containing whatever notes you want. It must be hand-written by yourself. You may write on both sides. You can also (hand-)write it on a tablet and print it.
- One non-programmable calculator (no smartphones, laptops, smartwatches, etc.)
Algorithm for computing proseminar grades
The grade for the proseminar will be based on the following two factors
- Percentage of handed-in (OLAT) exercises
- Participation in the PS, in particular oral explanation of and answers to questions on your handed-in solutions
Every week there will be some exercises that will be discussed in the PS. You will have to indicate (via a tick list in OLAT) which exercises you have worked on and upload them to OLAT by Thursday, 06:00 (CET) before the PS. Each sheet awards up to 10 points. By default, you receive the points for each sub-exercise you ticked; however, random checks will be performed each week and if your proseminar teacher finds that you wrongly ticked exercises you should not have, then points might get taken off. In extreme cases, repeat offenders may be penalised by failing the course for this!
Your overall grade will be determined by the best 9 (out of the scheduled 11) exercise sheets. Out of the achievable 90 points, you must have at least 50 to pass.
Ticking exercises
Every week before the PS, you have to indicate which exercises you worked on. This is done by ticking the corresponding boxes in OLAT. The rule of thumb is that you may tick an exercise if you have made a serious attempt at solving it. Here, ‘serious attempt’ means that there is something you could present in the PS. It does not have to be complete, it does not have to be correct, but it should convice your PS instructor that you really put in a serious amount of effort. In particular, you should at the very least be able to articulate what you did and why you got stuck.
Note that there is also a forum in OLAT where you can ask questions if anything about the homework is unclear or there is some part of the lecture material that you do not understand.
Grade key
Points | ≥ 80 | ≥ 70 | ≥ 60 | ≥ 50 | < 50 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Grade | Sehr Gut (1) | Gut (2) | Befriedigend (3) | Genügend (4) | Nicht Genügend (5) |
Absence from the PS
PS participation is mandatory. Being absent from the PSs more than twice without a valid excuse (e.g. illness, important appointments) results in failing the PS.
Excuses must be given to the PS instructor before the start of the corresponding PS. You will still receive homework points if you are absent (with or without a valid excuse) as long as you tick and upload in OLAT correctly.
Final remarks
Note that the exercise sheets are for your benefit. Every exercise you work on increases the chance that you will do well in the exam. It is tempting to only do the minimum amount of work required to pass the PS, but we can assure you that it is in your own interest to at least make a serious attempt at every exercise.
